3. Infra Oman: Powerful solutions for expansion of national infrastructure

With approximately 3 million inhabitants, the Sultanate of Oman which is located close to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen is embarking in the coming years on a massive expansion of its infrastructure.

In order to be able to get the best possible partner they have set up Infra Oman – a fair for infrastructure and industrial projects attended by the designers, contractors and suppliers. This year it was the third time that Infra Oman has been arranged and N.U.B. Engineering was pleased to be present at this prestigious show in Muscat.

Companies from all around the world working in the construction industry exhibited inovation,  modern technology and what potential can bring new developments for the future. N.U.B. Engineering presented how it is keeping up and at the forefront on all counts and was well received at the show.

Customers showed interest in the wide range of piling & drilling products at the exhibition from the small 100mm diameters up to large diameter piling equipment and the adaptability of tools for all conditions and rig types was well received.

Special technology is needed for civil engineering projects due to both the soils and  climate conditions and N.U.B. were able to demonstrate by past experience that their tools and equipment have been proven to be more than suitable.

Our drilling tools, drill bits, auger drives and the accessories were of interest to all areas of the civil engineering sector as well as for special sectors of the oil industries.

Patrick Deighan, Director of N.U.B. Engineering says.

“The dialog with the visitors was very interesting and the great interest has pleased us very much of course. The openness with which the interviews were conducted, have shown their confidence in our technology and the willingness to move forward with inovation and modern design”

Some new projects have been discussed since the show and N.U.B. Engineering are confident and proud to be able to say that it was a very successful exhibition for N.U.B. Engineering and that Oman will undoubtedly be a future market.

STDS NUB drilling Dubai

N.U.B. Engineering tools in use in Dubai

The international airport at Dubai is constantly being modernized and expanded to offer better facilities for passengers and the latest works is to provide a transportation system between terminals one and four.

Before the new structures could go up work had to go down and the contractor Balfour Beatty chose to use the expertise of N.U.B. Engineering Ltd. to manufacture the specialist drilling tools needed to drill for the piled foundations.
The new transportation system for passengers between terminals one and four are mainly used by international travellers and the Directors and staff of N.U.B. are pleased to be part of the company to help said the Managing Director Peter Jantz.
The foundations are being constructed under bentonite using conventional rotary drilling techniques with drilling bucket ranging in diameters from 1500mm to 2100mm which were all manufactured at the N.U.B. works in Motherwell Scotland before being shipped to the job site.

Retirement after 32 years and 25 years anniversary for N.U.B. welders

The union between N.U.B. Engineering and STDS-Jantz has combined the skill and expertise gained by both companies over the last 32 years. A pioneer from the very start is Ian Fitzpatrick who started in1980 as the very first employee at the Scottish manufacturer for foundation drilling tools. He has now now bowed out in his retirement.” I worked 32 years for NUB Engineering from the very beginning. That unites” said Ian, “I wish all the best to my colleagues and success for the company.”
N.U.B. was pleased to announce the 25 years service of John Wilson. John has been part of the team since 1987. Peter Jantz, Managing Director of N.U.B. Engineering and STDS-Jantz and Patrick Deighan, Director of N.U.B. together with his work colleagues, honoured him at the same event and presented him the golden watch for his 25 years anniversary. “We thank Ian Fitzpatrick and John Wilson for the long service. Our longstanding and skilful workforces are the reason for our success and allowing us to provide our customers with innovative designs and solutions for all their requirements of drilling tools.” Patrick Deighan says. “The experienced team further strengthen N.U.B. Engineering’s position as the most trusted, experienced specialist for high-quality drilling tools in the UK.”

The retort No. 4

N.U.B. Engineering: demolition and complete rebuilding of Brimac retort

Brimac Environmental have four retorts at their site in Greenock and import crushed bovine bones mainly from India for their process. The crushed bones are fed into the top of the retort where they are fired to 1000 degrees centigrade for between 12 to 24 hours. At the end of the firing process the product exits the bottom of the retort as a white powder, which is known as “Hydroxyapatite.” This product is then sold for fluid purification in the likes of sugar and water industries.

N.U.B. Engineering were employed for the demolition and complete rebuilding of the Brimac No. 4 retort. Work started with the controlled demolition of the old retort being undertaken in November 2011 when N.U.B. employees removed 97 tonnes of refractory material from site.

Once demolition and removal of all the material was completed the skilled tradesmen and experienced labour cast a 6″ concrete base in December which was then left to fully cure until 9th January 2012 when rebuilding of the retort itself commenced.

The new retort which is approximately 3m by 2.6m and 6m high and consists of a complex arrangement of bricks of multiple shapes and sizes for the first 72 of 84 courses. Because of the complexity the skilled N.U.B. bricklayers worked to individual drawings for each course with the 12 top courses of brickwork being cast blocks.

The entire works were successfully completed on time and within budget by Mid February.

Danish Water Well Drillers’ Association visits STDS-Jantz The members of the Danish Water Well Drillers’ Association were all in agreement regarding the destination for their technical fact-finding mission this year and headed to STDS-Jantz in Attendorn, Germany. The 25 strong delegation, from companies which specialise in geotechnical investigations, well drilling and searching for explosive ordinance, were impressed by the product range and the state-of-the-art production facility in March this year. Peter Jantz, Managing Director at STDS-Jantz, explains: “We were, of course, very pleased with the great deal of interest shown and the appreciation they expressed for our drilling technology in Denmark.” The guests were particularly fascinated by the extensive range of hollow stem and CFA augers manufactured in all sizes and to cater for all torques as well as the excavator-mounted rotary heads and augers specially developed by STDS-Jantz for the Danish market and used for taking disturbed soil samples. “Above all, the development of individual solutions and the high level of quality were a major reason for us to take a look at production at STDS-Jantz ourselves” commented one of the Danish guests. “You can see and sense the depth of experience that lies behind the use of cutting-edge technologies for production here,” The Northern European visitors were also impressed by the high level of in house manufacture and the production technologies used, which include friction welding machines, CNC-controlled coupling production and the welding of augers using robots. For the Danish Water Well Drillers’ Association, the visit provided a valuable insight into the company and was a fascinating visit to see and understand the impressive production processes for cutting-edge drilling tools and for STDS-Jantz, it was an additional incentive to continue developing advanced technologies for their international markets.

INTO THE HEAT – drilling tools of N.U.B. Engineering (casing, rock augers, rock drilling buckets and core barrels) N.U.B. Engineering is pleased to be playing a vital part in the rebuilding of the infrastructure of Iraq

The piling equipment has been supplied through ABI in Germany in conjunction with two new piling rigs for the construction of roads and bridge foundations across the country.

An order for three complete sets of drilling tools including casing, rock augers, rock drilling buckets and core barrels for diameters of 880mm 1180mm & 1500mm were supplied to a gruelling schedule to ensure that the rigs were able to go to work as soon as they arrived.

The time restraint of just over three months from first placement of the order to delivery at the customers door was met by tight scheduling of material supply and production through the workshop resulting in a total of 6 full lorries travelling across Europe to deliver the full order on time.

A full inspection of the 48 tools by the customer in the snow in Germany prior to dispatch to Iraq resulted in N.U.B. being told that they were delighted with the quality and the schedule they met and another new and satisfied customer.
